6 Things to keep in mind before renting an apartment!
When you rent an apartment, there are so many things to look out for. What if you get someone like Sheldon Cooper as your flatmate? What if your landlady has Um bridge-like traits? Plus, you’ve got to worry about the budget, locality, quality, agreement, and whatnot! Phew!
It’s a lot to do, especially if you’re a first-time tenant. And if you’re moving into a new city, it’s a different ball-game altogether. But don’t worry because we’re here to help you get through all of it!
1. Decide on a number
The most crucial thing to consider before renting a house is the budget. The rent, deposit, utilities, transport expense – you have to think of it all. You also have to think of the setting-up costs if you’re moving into an unfurnished house. You don’t want to splurge over your budget and skimp your way through every month. So, set a realistic number and stick to it.
2. The art of negotiation
Whether it’s your security deposit or monthly rent, your landlord/lady is likely to quote a higher amount. You don’t want to pay that much. What you do want to do is negotiate and reach a middle ground. So, it’s best to have a few reasons ready up your sleeve! Don’t know how to negotiate? Well, you’ve got to learn!
3. Seeing is believing
Renting a home is a business transaction. So until you’ve seen the space, do not hit transfer. Yes, you may see pictures of the house, but that doesn’t make it real. See the space for yourself and double-check all the taps, flushes, plug points, etc. If there’s something that needs fixing, this is a good time to let the owner know.
4. Scan the surroundings
Before sealing the deal for your new crib, it’s important that you become familiar with the streets. Talk to potential neighbors; find out the pros and cons of the area. Is it easy to find transport? Is the ATM close by? Is it safe? The last thing you want to do is to move into a sketchy neighborhood.
5. Read it again
We’re talking about the rental agreement that you’ll be signing. Most people get duped with additional costs because they’ve signed the agreement. So, read it again and again till you’re clear on each point – maintenance, water, electricity, and whatever extras there are. If you have anything to ask your landlord/lady, do not hesitate.
6. Do you need it?
Keep asking yourself this question when you’re making lists and packing. Moving is a long process, so you don’t want to add on to it! Get rid of the clutter and if you’re not sure about taking your furniture with you, there’s always the renting option!
